Skills and Opportunities Fund – vote for Parents 1st!

“My volunteer is someone who I can be myself with, who won’t judge me, who lets me make my own decisions and who helps me understand anything I’m struggling with. She’s been just wonderful”. (A mother supported)

At Parents 1st we are uniquely placed to make a difference for communities – and – with your help – we have a once in a lifetime chance to make that impact even greater. We help through a peer support programme members of the community support parents from early pregnancy, during childbirth and the early months of parenthood. This is a critical time in their life and in their baby’s development.

Our volunteers are highly trained and, uniquely, can spend time with parents in their own homes (and in hospital during childbirth), listening and talking with parents who overcome their challenges, gain knowledge, skills and confidence to offer their babies the best possible start in life.

We have strong evidence that our approach works. In a recent study, the majority of mothers saw significant improvements following the peer support provided.

Through the Skills and Opportunities Fund we have the opportunity to fully train another 35 volunteers to be peer supporters in Basildon, Thurrock and Canvey Island – areas where disadvantage can hit families hardest.

Those volunteers will mean an extra 80 families can benefit when they need it most. They may feel depressed; they may have previously had a traumatic experience, or simply be lonely.

And our volunteers will get skills and mentoring to help them progress, too, through City and Guilds qualifications to set them up for a brighter future.

We believe that parents want the best possible start for children we help make that happen. By helping parents thrive we’re helping communities thrive, too.

Please help us achieve that vision – vote for Parents 1st!
