I am one of the Co-ordinators of Community Mums (Scotland). Our organisation is the first Community Mothers Project in Scotland. Through Celia Suppiah’s support and guidance, we have been able to establish a pilot project in our area. Implementation Workshops

Parents 1st offers a range of 3-hour introductory workshops for organisations interested in setting up a Community Parent Programme in their local area. Each 3-hour workshop provides an overview of a key aspect of programme delivery identifying what’s involved and how it works in practice. The workshops can be adapted to suit local requirements.

 

Examples of topic areas covered:

  • Programme ethos: underpinning principles, fit with policy, research and evidence based practice
  • Feasibility issues: integrated and complementary working, programme running costs and sustainability
  • The role of the programme coordinator: responsibilities; competencies; and why the role is pivotal to a successful programme
  • Using semi-structured approaches: underpinning evidence base; and using the programme materials to provide focus, purpose and goal setting
  • Recruiting Community Parents: promotion and publicity; informal access routes; selection processes and what works best for retaining experienced volunteers
  • Overview of the Community Parent City & Guild accredited training programme
  • Enabling parents to access the support of a Community Parent: balancing universal access with targeted support; evidence of ‘what works’ from the Collective Evaluation of Community Parent Programmes
  • Policies, procedures, boundaries, ground rules and managing risk
  • Process and outcome participatory evaluation as an integral part of programme delivery
